A gripping novel about the depth of a sister’s love; poised to be the next book you won’t be able to stop talking about.
A missing girl on a journey of revenge and a Serial-like podcast following the clues she’s left behind.
Sadie hasn’t had an easy life. Growing up on her own, she’s been raising her sister Mattie in an isolated small town, trying her best to provide a normal life and keep their heads above water.
But when Mattie is found dead, Sadie’s entire world crumbles. After a somewhat botched police investigation, Sadie is determined to bring her sister’s killer to justice and hits the road following a few meager clues to find him.
When West McCray—a radio personality working on a segment about small, forgotten towns in America—overhears Sadie’s story at a local gas station, he becomes obsessed with finding the missing girl. He starts his own podcast as he tracks Sadie’s journey, trying to figure out what happened, hoping to find her before it’s too late.
First, I want to say that I am not being paid or compensated for this review. I was sent this book from Wednesday Books for an honest review. Everything in my review is my own thoughts and opinions.
I knew that this book would be heartbreaking once I read a little about it. I did not know how much it would break me, but boy did it. Sadie was such an incredible book, but all kinds of painful too. This book was so real and honest. Though I am not sure how my heart had survived it. I shall try my hardest to share the reasons why I loved this book.
I very much loved the writing in this book. It is told in two ways. First from the point of view of Sadie and the second is told in a podcast. I have never read a book written this way before and it was awesome! It is very well written. I was so caught up in this story that life just zoomed by without me.
The story begins with an opening of a podcast of “The Girls” by West McCray. The host has no idea what he is getting into when he starts out on his journey on helping find out what happened to a missing girl from a small town. The missing girl is nineteen-year-old Sadie. She has no idea that her story will be becoming a major podcast.
Sadie is out for blood. She is out to find out who murdered her sister. As you start to learn about Sadie and why she is on the adventure, you learn that she has an idea who the killer is, and she will do anything to make sure he is taken care of. Sadie and her sister have had a hard life and losing her sister has affected her and she wants the person to pay for what he did.
So, the reason why I decided to give this book a 4 out of 5 even though I am raving about loving it, is because of the ending. I really would like to know what happens to Sadie. I am not going to go in details because you need to read the story to see how you take the ending, but I find it that I needed a little more detail into what happens. I know that it is probably implied but for myself I would have liked to learn just a little bit more.
This is my first Courtney Summers book and I will be keeping my eye for more of her books. I really enjoyed this story. I have never really been into the podcast thing. I have had young children and it makes it very hard to listen to anything. Now that they are in school and I read this book I feel that maybe I should try out this whole podcast thing. I really enjoyed going back and forth from reading the podcast special and finding out what Sadie is going through.
Let me know what you think of the book! I would love to know how others feel about this book!
